"Make a Fresh Start Now"
You know I'm not sure if New
Years is really the new year any
more. Perhaps from a calendar
stand point January 1 makes
sense. From a business point of
view July 1 starts our fiscal
year. But from a realistic
standpoint the new year for
most families is the day after
Labor Day when school begins.
Thousands of students and parents
across the country got
new supplies for school. Students
filed into classrooms
with new outfits on and a brand
new lunchbox or trapperkeeper.
Most can put last year
behind them as they get a
fresh start with hopefully
fresh teachers. I think that
September is giving January a
run for its money as the new
year.
Of course school is not all that
is new or changing. Pretty soon
we'll see the leaves change and
winter will be upon us, but in
this season we hold onto summer
as long as possible. I don't
know about you but my Sunday
afternoons are about to get a
lot more interesting as football
season starts again, each team
has a fresh start.
So why would I be writing all of
this in the church bulletin? Perhaps
instead of making a New
Years resolution we should
make a resolution now? Of
course most of us don't remember
what that New Years
resolution was anyways so we
might as well get a fresh start.
Is now the time to start reading
your Bible (the church has a
great weekly reading plan in
this very bulletin!)? Perhaps it's
time to get involved in a new
ministry at the church; there
are plenty of places where you
can be involved. (Sabbath
School, MCA, Prison Ministry,
Community Service, Worship
Teams, and many more) Just
talk to a pastor and we'll get
you involved!
This week's sermon topic is about
servant leadership as given by
the example of Jesus. I would
argue that this is the purest
form of leadership possible and
even the most effective professionally,
personally and
spiritually. If you're looking
for a fresh start during this
season why not give following
Jesus a try? --Pastor Benji Ferguson , September 7, 2007 |
