"Available"
Recently a group I was part of played an
icebreaker game. I had to introduce
myself by giving my first name and an
adjective describing me, beginning with
the same alphabet letter that my first
name begins with. So I gave them, Irish
Ivan. (My paternal grandfather came
from Ireland to South Africa in the
early 1900’s).
What adjective best describes you?
Hardworking, dependable, honest—all
these will work if the question is asked
by a prospective employer. Charming,
faithful, accepting—all these will recommend
you to a person you’re hoping to
develop a meaningful friendship with.
How would you answer Jesus if He asked
you to describe yourself? One day Jesus came up to Levi, the tax
collector, sitting at his IRS desk. Jesus
said to him "Follow Me." So he left all,
rose up, and followed Him. (Luke 5:27-28).
From that day on Levi Matthew became “Available Levi Matthew.”
According to the dictionary the word“available” is an adjective, meaning, "suitable or ready for use or service.”
Twelve men decided to follow Jesus
because they were available. None of
them were qualified, but they were
available. And Jesus made these ordinary
men extraordinary simply because
they added “available” to their names.
Followers of Jesus are available for
service when given the opportunity.
Sometimes that can involve trimming a
busy schedule and asking God to help us
simplify our lives to make room for doing
service. Opportunities do not come only
to those with time on their hands. Being
ready to serve often means rearranging
the order of priority of things we want
to get done that day.
Please join me in praying this prayer,“Lord, here am I, send me; if it be but in
Your service, and to promote Your kingdom."
Please join me in being available for the
following opportunities to serve God and
promote His Kingdom:
- Cleaning and wrapping computers for
MCA in the gym on Sundays, 9am-1pm;
Mon-Wed-Fri, 9am-5pm; Tues-Thurs,
9am-9pm. There is work for everyone!
- Sunday, August 5 – MCA School Bus
maintenance to prepare for inspection
- Sunday, August 12 - MCA Registration
and Back-to-School Barbecue; 3-5pm
- Sunday, August 19 - MCA Work Bee
- September 19-23 – Register to attend
the CHIP Summit to prepare
yourself for involvement in the CHIP
community outreach to the Minnetonka
