"My Silent Witness Broken "
Monday
morning.
I’m on the
bus and
working on
my Crown
Financial
study. I
relish that I am a “silent witness”
to riders who notice my
Bible and holy demeanor.
A man boards the bus and sits
down next to me. I reposition
myself and now have less room
to work. As we head toward
downtown Minneapolis, he
compliments my ability to write
legibly during the bumpy ride.
“Any good words from the
Book?” he asks. I’m tempted to
give a short reply and return to
my lesson. Instead I obey the
Spirit.
I share some of the 2,350 Bible
verses regarding God’s guidelines
for money. I briefly explain
that the Bible discourages
debt and encourages people to
save for present and future obligations. “Highly un-American!”
he jests.
He asks what church I attend,
and I give him the details. I invite
him to attend some time,
but he is currently involved
with a church in the Plymouth
area. His faith and Bible
knowledge tell me he has a
healthy relationship with Jesus.
“You Seventh-day Adventists
are big on health, right?” he
asks. We have another brief
talk on health, and how like finances,
there are guidelines
from a loving God.
“By the way, my name is John”
I say near my stop. “Bill”, he
says, and we shake hands.
I’m thankful that Bill disrupted
my “silent witness”. You see,
other riders were listening too.
I guess the Bible verse to “always be ready with an answer”* really does mean always,
even on the Monday
morning bus ride.
